When To Plant

Zenith Zoysia Seed can be planted between May and August 1 - depending on your location North to South. Seed as early as possible to allow Zenith to become established before winter.

How Much Seed To Plant

To calculate the area to be planted, use the Yard Area Calculator or multiply the length of the lot in feet by the width in feet to arrive at the number of square feet. Deduct a reasonable amount for buildings, paved drives and walks.
Plant not less than one pound per 1,000 square feet. Using plenty of seed is the least expensive part of establishing a good lawn. "Saving" on the cost of seed results in spending more on watering and cutting weeds.

Seedbed Preparation: Till and level the lawn area, removing sticks, stones and debris. If this severe renovation is not practical, try the following approach:

  • Apply RoundUp to eliminate or reduce the vigor of the existing lawn grass and weeds and/or scalp the lawn by setting your lawn mower to its' lowest cutting height and mowing. Bag clippings and remove any debris on the surface.
  • Rake or scratch (aerify, scarify) the surface of the lawn to bring some soil to the surface.
  • Use a Cyclone type seeder. Broadcast Zenith seed at a rate of one to two pounds per 1,000 sq. ft. Divide seed in half and go over the area twice, sowing from east to west and then north to south to insure uniformity. Repeatedly aerify, dethatch or rake vigorously to get the seed in contact with the soil. DO NOT BURY SEED DEEPER THAN 1/4 to 1/2 INCH DEEP.
  • Mulch lightly with wheat straw if on a slope or to insure adequate soil moisture during seed establishment.
  • Begin irrigation and keep moist for the next three weeks or until seedlings are established.

Fertility at planting - Apply 15 lbs. per 1,000-sq. ft. of a complete fertilizer such as 5-10-15 or 10-10-10. In approximately 30 days make a second application.

After Planting

Water well immediately after planting, and continue to water as often as necessary to keep soil constantly moist below 1/2 inch. After seedlings emerge, water less frequently until watering only as needed - once the stand is established. View the printable brochure on How And When To Water .

Weeds

Control weeds by mowing frequently until Zenith Zoysia is established.

CAUTION: Do not use a weed and feed fertilizer or any other weed control chemical except Roundup before seeding Zenith Zoysia because such chemicals will inhibit germination or kill the Zenith seedlings as they sprout!
